Robert Downey, Jr. has secured the rights to Yucatan in a deal with Steve's son, Chad. Downey and his wife, Susan, will produce the film as the first project of their newly formed production company, Team Downey, with Warner Bros. Studio.
Over 1,700 pages of notes for the Yucatan project was found among Steve McQueen possessions after his death in 1980. He was developing the project as a starring vehicle for himself. The setting of the film takes place in the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico where thieves are trying to find buried treasure.
Downey's production company will use Steve's notes to develop the film with Chad McQueen serving as an executive producer.
There were earlier rumors of Quentin Tarantino showing interest in making Yucatan but we heard nothing more about it.
